Louisiana
Never been
Hear it's a place where magic runs wild
The waters are black, and
Stars look different there
Wind chimes and a warm breeze from the South
Smells of cypress and Spanish moss
And sweet apple wine
Late in the year
The clack clack clacking of train track
Makes noise and delivers
Something new to the world
Keen and fresh
Small, winking eyes like
Fireflies that light up the night
And a natural smile
Gators and snakes make their home here
But we still swim
Crab cages and crawfish for the boil with
Honeysuckle and ice pops for dessert
The skeeters bite, but the tune of
Crickets playing make it worth the while
Rocking on the porch beneath the
Wandering moon
Momma taught me to fend for myself
Told the kids we would need to
Learn to live
Or life would learn us
Tea as sweet as Summer
But the world is never as
Sweet as we want it to be
They say the river changes
Cuts you off in a flash
In life storms will come
Sometimes
Washing away everything we know
But sorrow isn't forever
Even though forever is sorrow
In itself, isn't it?
Packed our bags, headed North
Second star to the right and
Straight on 'til morning
A brave new world
A new address, new life
Made friends, made love
Not all good but
Not all bad either
A little bit of sugar, right?
Got a tattoo, got a job
Funny how someone so far from home
Gets people home to theirs
Long hours and longer nights
Hard to wake up but I make
This place move
Met a boy outside the bar
Said he was a writer but he
Didn't write me much, really
Thought he'd never but
Called me from bed
Put on my face and mussed my hair
Found him asleep
I'm sure a sigh could be heard by
The neighbors
Knock knock, nothing
A soggy story if I ever saw one
Put a hand on him and with
One eye open he said:
"Thank God you're here."
Took him a while but maybe this won't be
So bad after all
Shared our dreams, shared our pain
Went on a walk and stole rocks and moss
From the park next door and
Put it in a box
We called it art but really it was just
A reason to look at each other
I don't think we cared
Spent all our time together
Made up food, cooked up plans
Put a sticker on the wall but he was too
Afraid of his own shadow
Afraid of love
Couldn't even look at him without
A side-eyed eyebrow. Cold
To the warmth she had to give
Said some things he didn't mean
Meant some things he never said
Lost in the land of plenty with
A broken music box and a sour heart
So without a song she went
They say the river changes
Cuts you off in a flash
In life storms will come
Sometimes
Washing away everything we know
But sorrow isn't forever
Even though forever is sorrow
In itself, isn't it?
Louisiana
